Birch (member of Betula family) has a smooth, dense surface free from pores. Extracts of birch are used for flavouring or leather oil, and in cosmetics such as soap or shampoo. The sapwood is white and the heartwood is cream or light brown tinged with red. The grain is straight, close and has a fine texture. This wood is ideal for fitting around heavy work areas being doth durable and elegant at the same time.
